Myth #10: Factory monitoring is better because it’s designed for their generators.
Reality: It is not a Universal Solution and only works for their brand and specific models.

The need for generator monitoring is in clear focus and many generator manufacturers are embracing it. They have developed a brand compatible device that offers relatively simple connection and gives their customers real time generator data. Though, the problem is the monitoring they developed does not fit every product they offer with most cases it’s model specific. General reliability of the device is fair at best and it does not give their customers the ability to monitor what they really want to know. You want something that meets your requirements, know it will last, and backed by a Lifetime Warranty. Quite frankly factory monitoring just doesn’t make the cut.
The top generator manufacturers today offer a single monitoring device. This device typically only works for select generator models too. Not a problem for dealers selling new generators, but what about your clients that have older equipment or different brands? It would be a smarter move to use a universal product that can fit every client and every application too. Independent monitoring offers that brand flexibility.
When it comes to real time tracking, connection and reliability is extremely important. Losing connection can be damaging, especially for generator monitoring. Residential factory monitoring is typically Wi-Fi connected and commercial monitoring being primarily ethernet based. We weighed the benefits of using cellular versus Wi-Fi/Ethernet monitoring in our 8th Monitoring Myth. To read more about that, click here. Essentially, cellular monitoring is by far your most reliable form of connection and imperative that you find a monitoring source with that connection.
Each customer is different. Their needs vary and most generator applications are different. We found that about 80% of clients gravitate towards simplistic monitoring. We hear, “I just need to know if the generator is working properly”. Most clients don’t need or want the details. They just want to know that if the power goes out, their generator will work. Some factory monitoring solutions understand this, most do not. They provide a system that works best for them rather than their customers. Independent monitoring providers have been taking note and offer solutions that let the customer choose what they want to monitor by offering basic packages with scalable monitoring options to fit customer’s needs.
Independent monitoring has a lot of offer where factory monitoring just can’t compete.
